On Running has never really been one for understatement. From the moment those oversized CloudTec pods burst onto the scene back in 2022, the Cloudmonster has been impossible to ignore. So, when the Swiss brand claimed that version three would be the best yet, expectations weren’t just high – they were sky high. Thankfully, this time around, it feels like On has truly hit its stride.

Let’s rewind for a second. The original Cloudmonster was a bit of a game-changer – big cushioning, big personality, and a ride that felt refreshingly different. It quickly became a favourite for everything from daily miles to longer shifts. Version 2? Well, it had the right idea, but the execution divided opinions. The Cloudmonster 3, though? This is where it all clicks.

Front and centre is the new midsole. Now built with a triple-layer CloudTec system and Helion foam, it delivers a ride that feels both lively and composed. Each layer compresses and rebounds in a way that gives you a real sense of rhythm underfoot – cushioned, yes, but also purposeful. With a 35mm heel, 29mm forefoot and a 6mm drop, it strikes that sweet spot between protection and responsiveness without tipping into excess.

And the ride? Satisfying. Rather than going down the ultra-soft route, the Cloudmonster 3 leans into a slightly firmer, more energetic feel. The result is a shoe that feels stable, efficient once you find your rhythm. The rocker geometry and Speedboard work together brilliantly, gently rolling you forward so your stride feels smoother and more fluid, especially when the miles start to stack up.

Then there’s the upper – and this is where On has really listened. The redesigned engineered knit is a massive improvement: breathable where it needs to be, supportive where it matters, and comfortable straight out of the box. The tongue is properly padded, the lockdown feels secure without being restrictive, and the slightly roomier toe box is a welcome touch for longer efforts.

Put simply, it’s a shoe that just gets out of your way. No faff, no fiddling – just lace up and go. But. what makes the Cloudmonster 3 shine is its versatility. This is a proper workhorse of a daily trainer. Easy runs? Effortless. Long runs? Comfortable and consistent. Picking up the pace a bit? It’s more than capable. It might not be a full-blown speed demon, but it’s got enough bounce and flow to keep things interesting when you fancy stretching your legs.

Compared to the Cloudmonster 2, it’s a clear and confident upgrade across the board – better fit, better feel, better ride. And while it’s a touch more refined than the original, that added polish makes it a far more dependable companion day in, day out.

And yes, it sits at the premium end of the market, but this is a shoe that earns its place. You’re getting a distinctive ride, excellent comfort, and a design that finally feels as good as it looks.
